New U.S. Embassy Project
The United States is building a new embassy in Praia to strengthen the U.S.-Cabo Verde relationship.
The new U.S. Embassy Praia will reflect the culture and history of Cabo Verde in a new space that will enhance the 47-year bilateral relationship. The U.S. Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has begun the initial design phase for the project with a focus on creating a safe, secure, functional, and resilient platform for U.S. diplomacy. The partnership between Studio Ma, the Phoenix, Arizona-based planning and design firm, and local partner Cesar Freitas Architects brings together a talented group of experts to design an embassy that celebrates its location and the people who work there.
Environmental stewardship and resilient design are hallmarks of OBO’s program around the globe. The new embassy will not only take advantage of best practices learned from Cabo Verde’s long history on the archipelago but also utilize proven strategies from other projects to save energy and increase efficiency. The project will also support the neighborhood with strategies such as an innovative stormwater retention plan, which will prevent flooding and slow the inundation of water falling on the site. The project anticipates achieving a minimum of LEED© Silver in the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance, and operations of high-performance green buildings.
Once under construction, the project will employ local tradespeople and laborers, providing benefits and training in a variety of skills in addition to new jobs for hundreds. The embassy grounds will include gardens and green space that will contribute to this new landmark as it hosts the many programs held by the U.S. Mission. The new consular section will provide additional space and improved waiting areas, while the new American Center will enhance opportunities to engage with Cabo Verdians in support of diplomatic and cultural exchanges.
